Research into the Competency Areas and Training Needs for the Occupation of Thermal Spa Therapist in Europe

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify knowledge, skill and competence areas and training needs for the occupation of thermal spa therapist in five European project partner countries, namely Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal, Slovenia and Turkey. In order to collect data about the competency areas and training needs for thermal spa therapist, a questionnaire that included a scale of competency areas for thermal spa therapist, structured and open ended questions relating to competency areas and training needs is used. Purposive sampling is used and the questionnaire is conducted in ten thermal spa facility in each project partner country. Facilities are selected in a way to reflect diversity and variety in terms of size, services and geography. Data were gathered face to face from managers of spa or thermal facility, head of thermal, medical, or spa department and specialist working in spa, medical, thermal or wellness centre. Based on the results of the research, nine compulsory competency areas are identified. It is suggested that the education and training of thermal spa therapist should be broadened and extended in Turkey in line with research findings.
